I found this article interesting. Apparently some video communication software like zoom and Webex would keep listening to voice data even if the mic was muted. They just didn’t pass along the information to the other parties. This appears to be helpful when someone tries to talk and forgot to unmute, but in theory if there had been private conversations taking place behind the mute it could be stored or heard somewhere. It’s arguably not a major issue but interesting to think of the privacy concerns nonetheless. Notably, Webex was reported to have made changes to their software so this would no longer be the case after they heard about the issue back in January.
