Security tool guarantees privacy in surveillance footage

Surveillance  cameras have become ubiquitous in urban settings. They capture many aspect of our lives as we go about our business. These cameras can have some measure of privacy, blurring faces for example, but often times this is not full proof and can lead to a big brother is watching type of scenario.

Now some researches have come up with a way to add noise to those videos to help add a measure of privacy while maintain data integrity such that the video can be used for research purposes.

It sounds like a step in the right direction for privacy but time will tell if it is adopted or becomes common place. It’s likely companies or law enforcement groups would want to have access to unaltered data, so we may end up with some semblance of privacy but only after the raw versions are stored for other purposes. I think it’s too early to tell for now.
